The Protagonist Trio

El
Age: 18
Occupation: Thief

Summary: El is a cunning and quick-witted thief born of an infamous gang leader. Keeping a low-profile, El aspires to exceed his long-deceased father’s reputation. He seeks his dream through a Monarchy-sponsored tournament; an aspiration his brother, Prisym, strongly disagrees with. Despite Prisym’s adamant cynicism about the Monarchy, El has some faith that this will benefit them both. Alongside his friend Reboot and through a deal with the bounty hunter Kelly, El will soon discover what the Monarchy has in store.

Breakdown: El represents my optimism and ideals. Towards the end of the first series, his positivity becomes increasingly compromised by the events of the story. The choice between remaining optimistic and falling to cynicism forces El into serious life and death decisions.

Similarly, when I have fueled negative attitudes in myself over positive ones, negative results have occurred. El’s final act is also in line with my own idea of redemption: if I can’t forgive myself, then I’ll help people to forgive each other.

As an interesting aside, his profession and lifestyle represents my belief that I live in a way unlike most of society.

Reboot

Age: 13
Occupation: None
Element: Neutral

Summary: An alien boy with no knowledge of his past, the clever Reboot lives day-to-day in the wilds of the planet’s forests, using the power of the planet despite not being born from it. He keeps much to himself, fearing scrutiny of others. But thanks to his intellect, he’s quickly figured how to not only live on his own, but even communicate in the planetary dialect. When his only friend, El, reveals his plans for the tournament, he agrees to help. But, quietly, he thinks this could be the way he discovers where he once belonged, and why he is allowed to use this planet’s powers.

Breakdown: Reboot is relatively young as well as being from another planet. As such he represents the naive side of myself; the feeling that I don’t know enough to belong. As the series progresses, his naivety and humorous mistakes are outdone by his increasing bravery and fantastic decision-making. This makes great impacts throughout the series. In summation, he represents how I perceive myself currently, and how I hope to evolve in the future.

Kelly

Age: 18
Occupation: Bounty Hunter
Element: Fire

Summary: Kelly is a rambunctious bounty-hunter, and is one of the two remaining fire-types. Her mother, the other fire-type and a prestigious ex-military general, and brother, a well-known religious leader, have been forced into hiding after the downfall of the previous government. Seeking to maintain this, Kelly willingly works as a bounty hunter to provide for them while the two keep their cover. But when news of a Monarchy tournament comes her way, she realizes the security this could provide for her family. As such, she will do anything to join this tournament, even siding with a thief she was meant to hunt down. And nothing will stop her.

Breakdown: Kelly is the embodiment of my ideal girl. Aggressive, ever on-guard, rambunctious, arrogant, and quietly soft-hearted, she is the standard to which all my female characters live up to. El fulfills her quiet desire to be understood, as her unique situation leaves her disconnected from most. He also challenges her in all the areas she believed she was dominant, namely in the area of combat (Where El succeeds in their first encounter).

Towards the end of the series, her aggression and abundant power become a clear disadvantage, and she is forced to change herself, or suffer serious consequences. This choice is the same choice I’ve thought inevitable for the same kind of girls I’ve known. Whether or not I’m actually right about this is a whole other blog entirely.

The Angel Story: Prologue

i used to play-act to myself. i think everyone’s done this as kid; just kind of imagined you and a series of crudely thought-out characters in some fictional world a lot more exciting than the living room you were actually standing in.

one of these little stories stuck around. even while i was a teenager i was still charmed enough by this universe to act it out once more. making it bigger and the characters brighter. the story became quite it’s own monster.

since then i decided to develop the plot and removed the more childish fixtures. if i’ve been imagining a story for 14 years, and i consider myself a writer (or something), well shit; write it.

it’s a sci-fi fantasy set on a planet tentatively titled “Angel”. it’s scenery is based on a futuristic take on medieval times. the best comparison, and a big influence on it’s setting, is the look of Asgaard in “Thor”: it blends a barbaric viking style with a flair that i can only describe as “galactic”. the characters all contain powers based on elements. this power is granted from an energy that stems from the planet, and only their bodies are built to accept and utilize the energy (with a few exceptions).

and they — i can’t even be poetic about it — fight like dragon ball z.

i gauge the story’s length as though it were a television series. as such, the story (chronologically) is 2 series long (3 seasons for series 1, 4 seasons for series 2, 12 episodes a season), and a shorter story that can more or less be considered a movie. it contains 26 relevant characters. it’s first-person omniscient: it’s narrated by the main protagonist in both of the series but still provides a look into other characters’ actions (but not their thoughts), as well as the protagonist’s opinions about them.

in the first series, the plot revolves around a trio; a thief (the main protagonist), a young boy alien to the planet, and a fierce bounty hunter. they seek entry, for personal reasons, into a tournament. this introduces them to the constitutional monarchy (who sponsors the tournament) which runs the small planet, this kicks off a series of events in which they slowly realize their world is not what they think it is.

in the second, after a decade, the now older and jaded characters once again find themselves in the strange happenings of this planet, leading to an intense climax that alters the universe as they knew it.

because i’m still in the stages of cleaning up plot points, i haven’t gotten to actually write many pages of the story, but there are plenty of files documenting the details of it.

and i’ve already realized just how deeply this story has been woven. not just into my creativity, but even into my psychology. realizing this, i decided to start expanding on what the characters are actually expressing about myself, to get a better picture of what they’re meant to be like.

so in the following days, i will begin posting a synopsis of each character, and what they psychologically represent. i hope you like it, because i’ve never shared this with anyone before.

I can perfectly well tell the difference between satire of how people treat fat women (which some of this video is) and comedy that relies on mocking fat people for a cheap laugh thanks.

well that’s the tough part, isn’t it. i’m not questioning your ability to discern the humor (it’s why my post has an apprehensive tone, plus i’ve seen you be pretty funny in the past). i’m getting at that exact part at the end of your post: when people pick and choose what kind of humor is acceptable and isn’t. since humor’s subjective and can’t be standardized, it’s tough to call something a “cheap laugh”. after all, in a following post that i actually agree with, you mention how no one’s in the right to tell someone what they should do with their body.

how come it’s allowed to tell someone what to do with their humor, you know?

keep in mind, i’m someone with weight issues myself. i think i’m an example of how someone can laugh or understand humor about issues they themselves suffer from. and that it’s not really necessary to get up in arms about it.

i love my parents. i do. it’s funny because i can’t really articulate this in person to them, nor do i remember ever saying to anyone at all. so difficult it is to say it that i can’t bring myself to read the words on the screen, but, i really do love them.

i just hope, at some point, they realize my silence is just me being embarrassed by how much i care. and that i don’t think i can get the proper inflection or whatever in spanish. words are hard to get the emotion right in a language you’re less comfortable with. so imagine unveiling an uncomfortable emotion using an uncomfortable language. it sucks.

but it’s there. i’m glad i said it somewhere. i have an inkling this will boomerang back to me and that, by then, they will have heard about me saying it. they can neither read nor hear me say that i love them (they can’t read this level of english). they’ll just have to kinda understand it. feel it emanate.

that’s what family’s about though, isn’t it.
